29 Apr Expo 2015, the event that changes Milan
The last time Milan hosted the world was 1906. It should have been 1905, but due to delays with works in Sempione Tunnel, the Universal Exposition was postponed to the next year. The future of transportation was the chosen theme: from Ford cars to the first attempt of building a metro (at the time called "elevated railway"). The future was in Sempione Park, enclosed in the Art Nouveau buildings erected for the occasion by 35.000 exhibitors from over 40 countries.
Visitors crossing the entrance corridor always widened their eyes. Climbed on the first cable car, rolled down the brand new tobogga the energy of change, in the new century that had just begun, infected everyone. It was a success and Milan still preserves some liberty art examples from that historic event, acme of technological positivism.
From May 1st to October 31st, Milan will be crossed by another wave of energy. In 2014 it had been the thirteenth most visited city in the world, and also included among the three most important destinations of 2015. Expo turns our city into an opportunity for confrontation among different cultures and inspiration, in order to understand what paths are better to be taken for the future of the planet.
"Not only is it an exhibition but also a process, one of active participation among a large number of players around the theme of Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." Expo 2015 has been described in this way by the corporate video.
Nourishment is both for body and mind, it generates ideas and improves citizens' lives. It also gives a new face to the city and arises from the confrontation among different cultures.
The most curious among you who want a preview of pavilions' design and organization, can check the interactive virtual tour out on the website.
The official opening is expected for April 30th: Andrea Bocelli will perform a concert in Duomo square, accompanied by the orchestra of La Scala. Giorgio Armani, Expo 2015 ambassador, celebrates its 40 years business with another special event.
This is only the beginning of a year we hope could be really special both for us, who have the great responsibility of hosting and assisting you in these months with a high quality service, and for you that will witness the greatest show of a growing world and a changing city.
